Frequently asked questions

What is raw DNA data?

It's the file a DNA testing company lets you download: a list of SNPs with an rsID, chromosome, position and genotype, usually 600–700 thousand rows. Sequencing services (Genotek, Dante Labs, Nebula) provide data in the VCF format.

Why convert a file to the 23andMe format?

The 23andMe format is the most widely supported one: almost every DNA analysis service reads it, including GEDmatch, Genomelink, Genetic Genie and Living DNA. Converting lets you upload VCF and other formats there.

Is it safe?

Yes. The file is processed right in your browser, on your device: it is never sent to our server or shared with anyone. Nothing is kept after you close the tab.

Where can I upload the converted file?

See the catalog above: it lists services that accept raw data, with formats and prices. Our top pick is Genomelink.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. All converters are free, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of files.
